A sort of oral history or autobiographical poem, Je Parle Français not only records but re-performs memories through its process of production and presentation. As the two American women on screen revisit and poetically reconnect with spaces around their host city—Lyon, France—their experiences of these now-familiar spaces collide with memories of a once-unfamiliar city. To communicate this sense of dépaysement to the audience, the video is intended as part of a live, interactive presentation where spoken word, movement, and digital images merge to extend the women’s experiential map of Lyon beyond the screen and into the presentation space.
